Part 1
"Julie... Gary... and Mary," my student teacher said. My whole face flooded with red. My cheeks were redder than ever before. I... actually had to be Science partners with GARY. I'm fine with Julie but Gary?!?!?!
I walked over to his desk with my science book work sheet. "Ugh, why do I have to be with you freaks!" he told us. I stayed silent. My face calmed down while I sat down in front of him. I picked up my pencil and looked the notes I had made about "weather." Scribble scribble. "Hey guys!!! What's number one?" Gary screamed. I finally spoke out, "We aren't here to tell you the answers Gary, we're here to HELP each other." "MS. HOPPER! THEY ARE MAKING ME DO ALL THE WORK!!!" (Ms. Hopper is the student teacher) My face went bright red. Not with embarrassment, with anger. "No, we aren't doing th-" I saw Ms. Hopper shake her head and smile. Psh. She thought it was cute. After I paused, Gary snatched Julie's pencil and tried to take mine. I hung onto my pencil, but the squishy thing on it made it slip away.
"Give us our pencils!!! We haven't even done Question #1 yet!" We shouted. "So what! I will give 'em back if you tell me the answer." "No!" I said. "Oh fine, the answer is polar zone," blurted out Julie. Julie!! I thought. He didn't do that again... thankfully. Well he didn't do that again because right when Julie told Gart the answer to #1, Ms. Hopper told us to go back to our seats.
"Good grief does that boy give me the itch to sock him!" I didn't though. It's too bully-like. I walked back to my desk and I gave him a mean glare across the room with my face hot. He didn't see me but I didn't care. "Lord, please know that if that was the chance you game me to make him STOP bullying me and me getting to like him as a friend, then I think that that mission failed. Failed pretty good."
Part 2
One morning after that terrible experience, (not the next day but, something close to the next week) my real teacher Mrs. Duffy pulled me outside. Right as she had called my name, I had noticed Gary walk out of the hallway and into the classroom. "Oh great," I thought. I knew what was coming to me.
"Mary, has Gary been calling you names lately?" she asked. I nodded. "Why didn't you tell me?" I spoke up at once. "Well, I don't think that it's a very smart thing to do if you just have one problem and tell the teacher that. I like to keep a log of things that people had done to me that is rude. Oh, and I have lots of comments for Gary in that log and Gary only." She understood me. "I see. That's a smart thing to do, but if something ever comes up like this again anytime, any day after 8:00 this morning, then I am going to have to call his parents." I smiled a little smile that Mrs. Duffy couldn't see. "Thank you Mrs. Duffy!" "Are you happy?" she asked. "Yes! I'm very happy!" "Good girl." I hugged her. I opened the door and shut it as quiet as possible. I looked at Gary. He didn't dare look up. I could tell. His face was still red. I walked into my seat. I felt pretty good about myself and the day that was coming. The announcements came on and I put my hand over my heart. I said the Pledge of Allegiance and I prayed so hard during the moment of silence that my eyes were red when I opened them. My pray was so successful, that you would fall to the ground!

  1. Mabby, I'm very thankful your teacher intervened in your behalf! I've been praying about it, too, and I believe God used her to help you. I'm proud of you for staying strong. I love you very much and celebrate with you. I like your blog and hope it gives others a place to vent about bullies who make life miserable. Bullies need friends, too. Love and a big hug, Gigi

  2. Red faces.....

Mary- bravery is shown in the actions you take to establish ownership of your own life. We all get red faces every now and then for different reasons; people like Gary try to create shame and guilt when red faces are present. I like your story because Gary eventually had to deal with his own red face; but actions are more important than appearances. I encourage you to keep holding this little nit responsible for his actions. A job well done but it's not over.... he will return again and you must continue to stand your ground. Life is a journey, not a destination. Always trust God to give you the answers in such a situation and you will continue to prevail!

  3. Mary this is very moving. I get it. I understand what you are going through. I appreciate your honesty. Wow. You are not alone baby!

I believe the strategy of prayer that you utilize is right on! If you would like, I am willing to listen to anything else about this that you would like to share.

  4. Mary - I am so glad you are writing about your experience. It made me think of the Serenity Prayer.

"God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference."

    You have courage and wisdom.

  5. See if these lyrics sound familiar?

When there's nowhere else to run
Is there room for one more son
    One more son
    If you can hold on
If you can hold on, hold on
I wanna stand up, I wanna let go
You know, you know - no you don't, you don't
I wanna shine on in the hearts of men
I want a meaning from the back of my broken hand

    (guitar starts)
dun dun dun dun dun dun dun...

I got soul, but I'm not a soldier
I got soul, but I'm not a soldier

    (drums start!)
I got soul, but I'm not a soldier
I got soul, but I'm not a soldier

    (Luke's choir solo...)
I got soul, but I'm not a soldier
I got soul, but I'm not a soldier

If you can hold on.....(ending drums, BAM!)

Mabby you "got" soul girl! And you ARE a soldier...with a mighty army of people behind you who love and believe in you. You may be the one who has to face the bullies, but you have lots of people who are right behind you that those bullies cannot see, but you know are there. Draw on our strength to re-energize when you get tired...so you can get back to playing that killer guitar! xoxoMomma
